Current News from LIBEC's Executive Board

November 2008

Dear LIBEC Member:

Over the past few weeks SCBTA and LIBEC have been revisiting the mission of each organization. It was clear that both organizations were working for the same membership base and had the same goals in mind:

  • Professional Support and Networking
  • Semi-annual Membership Meetings
  • Student Scholarships
  • Student Contests
  • Professional Field Trips/Networking
  • Annual Spring Meeting and Luncheon Awards
  • Contacts with Publishing, Business and Industry Professionals
  • BTANYS Discounts
  • Updates from NY State Education Dept
  • Promote Business Education
  • Professional Development Workshops

On Monday, October 6, LIBEC and SCBTA merged and a new organization was created, Long Island Business Teachers Association. The “official” change will take place on January 1 due to the fact that it will take time to create bylaws, a new treasury and a new website.

If you are a 2008-2009 LIBEC member, you are a member automatically of Long Island BTA. However, if you have not yet joined LIBEC, just go to www.libec.org and register.

Both the SCBTA and LIBEC boards are confident that this merger will allow us to create a stronger organization for Long Island. It is imperative that Long Island business teachers unite to strengthen business education, not only on a local level but in New York State.

S. Dianne Elmore, President LIBEC

September 2008

Dear Business Educator:

I hope you had a very relaxing and enjoyable summer. Now that you have returned to school, I hope your first few days of the 2008-2009 school year were calm and productive. The LIBEC Board has also returned, and we are excited about the events planned for the upcoming school year.

Please check your mail for the LIBEC application. You can also download the application by clicking on “Membership Application."

Just return the application to “Ana Tuzzolino,” as noted at bottom of the application. If your district requires an invoice, please email me at selmore@smithtown.k12.ny.us, and I will send you one.

As in the past, we are continuing to offer a departmental membership so your entire department may join realizing a substantial savings. Our goal is to have our membership directory completed by October 30, 2008, so please send in your application with your check and/or purchase order as soon as possible.

Your LIBEC membership affords your department the opportunity to remain current with your fellow business colleagues in both Nassau and Suffolk counties, access to professional development. Your membership also provides your students with the opportunity to participate in the annual LIBEC competition, apply for our LIBEC scholarships, and to attend the our competition awards ceremony in May.

Please add the LIBEC events to your personal calendar. There will be more detailed information about each event as the dates approach. All event information will be published on our website. You will be able to download various applications for scholarships, contests, and membership. You can contact me or any board member via e-mail.

I am looking forward to working with you this year. If you have any suggestions on how the Board and I can serve you more efficiently, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,

S. Dianne Elmore, LIBEC President
